DJ Lyfe, aka Gavin Koppel was the turntablist and a co-songwriter between the years of 1995 and 1998, as well as being a graffiti artist. Nearly fifteen years ago Hip Hop was still proving its self in a world dominated by Rock n' Roll. Hip Hop was widely misunderstood as a trend that died out with fat laces and boomboxes. The truth was that Hip Hop was just beginning to dominate the world.
In suburban Los Angeles, house parties were a haven for young deejays and emcees. Vacant spaces of land and walls lining traintracks were the canvases for Graffiti Artists. Enter dj1987 (at that time under a more juvenile alias), a young man who was thirsting for a taste of true Hip Hop since long before it really existed anywhere but parts of NYC. He would sneak out late at night to hit house parties and underground events. He would rack up spraycans to get graffiti fame, and after half of his life he's now ripened his skills for the whole world to see.
Although he is not currently signed to a major record label, he is no stranger to the music industry. In 1995 he began experimenting as a turntablist with Rock group "Incubus", and went on to record 2 albums with them. When the rock world just wasn't right for him, he went back to his Hip Hop roots performing at major Hip Hop events in Los Angeles, and released a solo EP (1998). From there he has become well known on the Hip Hop scene for his Mixtapes and rhyme skills. He is also known as a positive role model connecting with the youth as a street team coordinator for major motion picture and record companies.
Though DJ Lyfe was with the band for a only a short period of time, his innovative use of the turntable as a rock instrument signaled the beginning of a new era for both the band and, for better or worse, rock music in general. The following years would see a rise of a new sub genre, Nü-Metal, in which the turntable and other hip-hop influences became significant.
Though Incubus would remain on the outskirts of this movement, the mark that Lyfe put on the EP "Enjoy Incubus" and to the bands first major label album, "S.C.I.E.N.C.E.", was both fresh and distinct. Perfectly timed scratches and colorful samples stand out and bring another dimension to the music.
When DJ Lyfe was asked to leave the band in 1998, his position was still deemed a critical element to the band's music, so DJ Chris Kilmore was brought in as a replacement. Though DJ Kilmore would prove to bring a new element of blended, organic sound to the band, the reverberations of DJ Lyfe's work is still audible to this day. incorperation continued heard still is on influence Lyfe's band, from ouster.
